First of all, apologies for any inconvenience or loss of forum data you may have experienced the past few days. The disruptions were due to me creating a new deployment method for this forum from scratch. The forum appears to be stable and functional, but there may still be wrinkles to iron out.
So why did I do this? Like many other organizations around the globe, we rely on software products from a company called Bitnami that are integrated across our MUSES infrastructure, web services, and even the Calculation Engine itself. If these components are not in the foundation of our house, they are at least embedded in the flooring. In the case of the forum, it was an entire room. Recently, Bitnami announced that they will no longer offer these components for free.
What is Bitnami? They’ve been packaging open source software into containers and Bitnami helm charts for 18 years. Databases, web servers, caches, basically everything you need to run applications. Now Broadcom owns them and wants $50,000-$72,000 per year for what used to be free.
Their original deadline for making this transition was today, August 28, but yesterday they offered a reprieve, delaying the deadline until September 29. Over the next week or so, I will be working almost exclusively on refactoring our applications and deployed infrastructure to eliminate our dependency on Bitnami products. Continued use of the last free version of their products still requires work to adapt the deployment configurations to reference their new “legacy” repository of static code, so I plan to skip that temporary workaround and dedicate all effort to a long-term solution.
This work will result in sporadic service outages and potentially even some data loss, but I will do my best to avoid and minimize these incidents. If you notice problems, check
the service monitor for an announced reason. If you do not see an explanation, please post here so I can address the problem.
